Which route is best going from Guarda/Zernez region of Engadine to Merano/Bolzano and Dolomite region?

If you're driving the more scenic route is IMO via Scuol - Martina - Nauders - Reschen and down the valley to Merano.

If you're on public transportation you have to take the bus from Zernez via Ofen Pass to the first town in Italy (Mals I think) where you can catch the train to Merano.

Honestly, both routes are scenic and it really subjective which is more beautiful. I prefer the views of the Lake Reschen with the old church tower peeking out of the lake (it's bizarre) and the snow-capped Mt. Ortler in the background.

If someone has done this drive can you describe the road conditions...narrow roads, few or many hairpin turns, etc...Thanks

Hi deladeb,

We drove from the Rechen Pass to Meran/Merano and then on around Bozen/Bolzano back up to the Val Gardena. No problems with the roads. They are all very good. By Rechen Pass there are some "switchbacks", but not with sheer drop offs and not in the mountains. Nothing like the other passes in the Dolomites. The rest of the way is a two lane road which is very good. Nothing out of the ordinary, except for the castles, vineyards and scenery!

I've driven the route that Ingo describes (in the opposite direction) and, as I recall, it (mostly) follows valleys and is therefore (mostly) free of narrow roads and hairpin turns.

It's also (mostly) beautiful!

Should we use a GPS as we traverse the route Chamonix, Lakes, Engadin Valley, Merano, Bolzano and Dolomite regions? My maps are 1/400,000.

Hi again,
We've never used a GPS on our trips. I can only comment on the area's we've been but In my opinion the drive (and area's) between Switzerland and Merano, Bolzano and Dolomite regions is pretty easy to navigate.
