From Florence to Orvieto

This March we are spending a week in Florence and were wondering if anyone had driven from Florence to Orvieto as a day trip? If so, how long is the drive? Is it do-able or all too much for one day? Any help would be appreciated.

I am afraid I don't know about driving time, but frequent IC train from Florence to Orvieto only takes a little over 1 1/2 hours. Certainly it's doable for day trip.

What is your objective in doing Orvieto as a day trip???

Some of the loveliest countryside in Italy is between these two cities - especailly in late March. You certainly don't want to take the freeway between the two, (which you'll have to do to make it a day trip) and miss this pretty area.

I suspect it's a 2 1/2 hr trip each way on the freeway, which would eat up most of the day. I can think of many other day trips that would be more enjoyable.

What's wrong with Siena or Lucca as day trips instead of Orvieto - they're much closer. Volterra & San Gimignano would be a nice day trip, as would Pienza, Montalcino, & Montepulciano. The Val d'Orcia (just south of Pienza) is breathtaking that time of the year.

Hi lite,

If you are spending a week in Florence, do you really need a car?

Florence/Orvieto by train is 1:30 hr and costs about 28E RT.

I recommend I Sette Consoli for lunch.

I agree with Stu--there are at least 10 villages as interesting within an hour radius of Florence.

Thank you all for your replies.

We are planning day trips to Lucca and Montepulciano, and we've been to San Gim. and Siena, but on a previous trip, when we were based in Umbria, we never made it to Orvieto, and we'd like to remedy that on this trip.

We will look into the train to Orvieto, since that sounds reasonable, time wise, and cost wise, but for the rest we will probably rent a car because we like the freedom.

Thank you all again. I'll let you know what we decide.

Ira -- the restaurant recommendation has been duly noted.
