Elle, the song you are referring to is "Ex fan des Sixties" , a 70s classic, written by Serge Gainsbourg, sung by Jane Birkin, Gainsbourg's then partner. Must be available on all Jane Birkin compilations.

And, s.fowler, My Way is not Comme d'habitude's French version, it's the other way around: yes, it's good all Claude who sang it first, and Sinatra did a cover in English (like Around the Sea being the English version of Trenet's La Mer)

Congratulations to the poster who bought Benabar's CD, one of France's emerging talents. In the same league, I would also recommend Vincent Delerm or Benjamin Biolay. And of course Renaud, who has just released a new album with a moving song on 9/11 (Manhattan Kaboul)

My favorite is George Brassens. Although he's not French, Jacques Brel sings in French and his songs are beautiful. For pop, Francis Cabrel, Laurent Voulzy, Alain Souchon are great and MC Solaar is THE greatest.
Sadly, I find most French female singers dreadful with wimpy, quavering, I-am-a-such-a-victim voices: Veronique Sanson, Mylene Farmer are the best (worst?) examples. As always, your mileage may vary!

I'm throwing my vote to Bruno Pelletier, Renaud and Patrick Bruel - who have each released a new CD very recently.

My all-time favorite is Francis Cabrel. Other favorites include Pascal Obispo, Daniel Seff, Enzo Enzo, Lara Fabian, Linda Lemay, Daniel Lavoie, Paul Piché and Florent Pagny.

My fave "old-timers": Georges Brassens, Gilbert Bécaud, Félix Leclerc.

Here are specific CDs that I would strongly recommend:

Francis Cabrel - Hors saison
Renaud - Visage pâle rencontrer public
Bruno Pelletier - Un monde à l'envers
Florent Pagny - Savoir aimer
Daniel Lavoie - Douce heure
Daniel Seff - Mes jours d'ailleurs
Patrick Bruel - Si ce soir

I also have to mention:

Renaud - Renaud chante Brassens
(it's an absolutely great tribute album!)

Charles Trenet is absolutely my favorite. He was extremely popular during the WWII era, and on into the 50's and 60's, maybe longer. He wrote his own songs - "La Mer" being probably the best known. I have CD's of Jacques Brel, Piaf, Dany Brilliant, Charles Aznavour, etc. But Charles Trenet is the one I can't stay away from. He has definitely helped my French!

There's a wonderful compilation CD of 50 French songs covered by Liane and the Bohemian Bar Trio. Liane was a Viennese-born cabaret singer from the 60's...smooth, sultry voice with great instrumental backup. Vanguard Classics has it.

Also I haven't seen anyone mention Art Mengo. He's very good.
