If you want a stopover between Strasbourg or Paris (you know it isn't that long a train ride, only about 2 hrs, you don't have to have one for that reason), I would choose Nancy or Reims for a day. They are not really on the same train run, though, the TGV from Strasbourg to Paris doesn't stop anywhere usually. But they are on the rail line going in the right direction, so it is convenient as a stop.
Nancy has a wonderful Art Nouveau museum, if you like that style, and an excellent regional museum. Of course Reims has the famous cathedral, several good museums, historical interest re WWII (the museum of the Surrender is fascinating),and champagne houses. So if you are very interested in WWII history, I'd choose Reims. It's got it all.

Nancy in the Place Stanislas has what is often called the largest most imposing town square in France:

Reims in nice too but 45 minutes from Paris could or should be a day trip to appreciate its many faceted offerings, like Champagne Cave/House tours.

I love Nancy, too, but my preference still goes to Metz.
However, here is Nancy:

reverse the walk if you wish for some reason - I don't see any but do not take the Tube back then or you will mist these kind of sights from the South Bank Walkway - much nicer than the Tube IMO.

thank you very much for all the info. I've decided to go to Strasbourg and Metz. Can't wait.
Just wondering, our flight is landing in Frankfurt at 10am. I want to purchase train tickets to Frankfurt tonight. How much time is enough to get from Airoport to train station taking into consideration that our flight is International flight and we probably should have some extra time just in case.
thanks for all inputs

On a day going to Paris I'd chose one or the other - each has many things of interest - Metz is more half-way or so to Paris and Strasbourg a detour - either spend a rushed few hours in each and see the tip of the proverbial ice berg or see one better.
