Wow! And to think I was feeling like a soulmate of John's when he said re wine connaisseurship, "I have been known to enjoy gasoline and lighter fluid." The question was how would a FRENCH person pronounce.. .? (not your local wine dealer)

At any rate, here's my two-cents' worth: ai in French is always "properly" pronounced short e (Canadian eh) except for j'ai (jay). Lait should be "leh", mai "meh", mais "meh", etc. BUT, as Florence pointed out, people aren't really precise in following this pronunciation rule, although IMO they are pretty solid on pronouncing the imperfect/conditional endings "eh." But I think especially in the South (Mireille Mathieu) the tendency is to make them all ay.
