We will be attending a 5 course dinner with entertainment & a dance at the Old Salzburg residence. Does anyone know what the dressing attire might Be? Thanks in advance.

beckyann: Unfortunately your title is awfully vague/ "formal attire" doesn't tell anyone you are talking about Salzburg, the event, or even Austria.

You MIGHT get some responses - but you have better luck if you re-post with a title something like "Old Salzberg Residence dinner dance - appropriate dress?"

Of course formal. Definitely not jeans but neither glitters. A way between: a suit and a tie for a man and either a tailleur or a gown + blouse for a woman.

Formal...possibly white tie.

Pack your formal attire in clear white plastic bags. The TSA will un zip your colored garment bags...wrinkle your things and they will not put your tux or ball gown back as you packed it.

If you can carry your garments on...if you have an expensive ball gown and the jewelry that goes with it.

I attended an event last month in Salzburg...I consider myself an excellent dresser...I could have stepped it up a few notches for the way they dress over there.

Beckyann: Lucky you!!!! What fun you'll have- especially if you contact the host/hostess ahead of time and find out what is expected. Your host will not want you to feel uncomfortable, it's a perfectly natural thing to ask in this case.

Sorry for the confusion. In the US formal attire refers to a tuxedo for men - or dinner jacket - depending on the season - and a formal gown (although not necessarily a ball gown) for women.

Agree you should ask your host for specifics - but I have attended a couple of "events" in Austria and in my experience they are distinctly more formal/exuberant than we are. But you can always do a simple black gown rather than a full ball gown - if your host agrees its formal.
