Food shopping in Amsterdam?

Are there any close by supermarkets or small grocers in the Canal Ring / Dam district of Amsterdam? If not how far are the food markets?

Thanks

There are supermarkets all over Amsterdam, people live there and need to eat too.
If you do an internet search for markets in Amsterdam you will find out where and when different markets are held in the city.

When we are there we would like to shop in stores that specialize in cheese or meat or bakeries or whatever as we walk around the city, is there a list of preferred shops?

No specific recommendations but there are so many bloggers etc in big cities you will surely find such lists. Here is one example I found on a google of "food blog amsterdam". It includes a list of "Top 10 Specialist Food Shops".

And another similar one

http://www.amsterdam.info/shopping/supermarkets/

Albert Heijn supermarkets are all over Amsterdam - literally - they are often tucked away and hardly noticeable in some places but they have everything you want - excellent fresh veggies, delis take out foods and everything any American supermarket would have.

One big one is the one located behind (west of) the Royal Palace - open long hours seven days a week.

You will have no problem finding supermarkets in Amsterdam.

I will be on the look out for Stroopwaffles, even though I prefer monosyllabic foods.

I happened upon a wonderful "health food store" near my hotel. They had fruits and vegetables but also lots of prepared items I could use for a picnic dinner.

You might also look out for the Albert Cuyp Market - the biggest street market in Amsterdam:

The ones we went to (Heijn usually) couldn't take even our chip cards, though. You'll need cash. Luckily they also tend to have ATMs.
