Foie gras, redux
I’ve read some older posts here and on TA, but has anyone brought in any lately? The government website says something like, if cooked and in a hermetically sealed container, maybe.
What’s your experience been. Leaving Monday (whoo hoo!)
Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problem, especially returning from France. We normally pick some up at the airport if we forgot to while traveling around. Some of the best, by the way, can be found in southwest France, Ferme Uhartia (www.ferme-uhartia.com) from Famille Laxagueborde in Barcus, Pays Basque. Good foie can set you back €30+ for a small container.
One of the things that we do is just not declare it since the USA has an agreement with at least one major producer in France, but the customs agent I talked to had no idea which one it was and let me through, although the foie I was carrying at the time was from Spain, not France.

I brought a small jar back with me in September. I declared it and the agent just waved me through. If it is pure fois gras you shouldn't have a problem, but I did have a problem a few years ago with some pate that included pork even though it was canned.

A Agricultural Inspection supervisor at JFK told us, a few years ago, that even pork is acceptable as long as it comes in cans. In other words, pâté is acceptable. However, no forms of beef can be imported because of mad cow disease. The problem is convincing the local inspector that this is the rule.

It might be best to carry a copy of the following if the traveler is bringing something that might be questionable:
