Are there Mosquitos in France?

Hi,

Greetings from Ramanagara, India. My student Mr. Gausia told me there are no mosquitoes in France. He seems to have picked up that info from a book. Please let me know how true or false is it?

Thanks

There are fewer mosquitoes in France than in the U.S., which is one reason why screens are still not popular. Our house in the French countryside will have all sorts of flies trapped against large glass panels, including horseflies which don't bite when trying to escape, but practically no mosquitoes. On the other hand, wet areas such as the Camargue or la Grande-Brière in western France will undoubtedly have mosquitoes.

Oh my gosh, yes! One summer we were so badly bruised from the bites we looked like we had a bad case of the measles!

Well, you won't find mosquitoes everywhere. And certainly not all year long.
It also depends on the weather of the previuos weeks. Near Bordeaux where my parents live, there were many of them during this early summer. Much more than the ten past years for example.

This myth comes from the old joke "Why are there no mosquitoes in France?" - "Because there are so many frogs."
Of course there are mosquitoes in France. They seem to love me unfortunately.

Yeah, because the US is a hell of a lot bigger than France.

Just google moustique France and you'll see thousands of sites about mosquitoes in France, including this one, which maps the presence off tiger mosquitoes (the ones that cause dengue fever) all over the country:

You'll find mosquitoes where ever you find livestock; pigs, cows, goats, horses, whatever, It's a simple fact of life.

As far as having windows with screens to keep out pests, including mosquitoes and flies, although not common, they are now being used in some areas.

The French mosquitoes do have much better taste in wine, cheese and baguettes than their American cousins.

All I know is if we took off the screens on our house in Massachusetts we would be eaten alive. I have never stayed in a place in France that has window screens.
