I just borrowed from the library the 2015 Fodor's Guide for Spain, what a pleasant surprise. I am not sure when they made all these changes but they are welcome. They have added significant sections on a number of areas including the Pyrenees and offer more and accurate detail on food. One of the subtle changes I liked was writing the names of certain attractions and hotels in the local language such as Catalan, Basque and Gallego. I felt that the writers truly had a feel for the country, rather than the dull recapitulation of the past.

Bravo Fodor's.

That is a great autocorrect that obviously I don't know how to stop.

But I am sure there someone on these boards who will swear that they or their best friend has been to Stop and loved it.

Never been to Stop, but I did Stop "By" once.

Not sure what the stop means, but I like Fodors guide to Spain, I think whoever the editors/writers are on that one, they do a great job. It's my favorite Spain guidebook.

Perhaps you are unaware, but guidebook authors often live in the country, at least the major guidebooks and for the major countries. Or they have at some time or spend a lot of time there. It isn't written by people who know nothing about the place or have never been there for a considerable time. One of the Spain guidebook authors is Lauren Frayer, who is also an NPR and LA Times correspondent and lives in Spain.

I like the Fodors Guide to Spain, too, but weight-wise, it sure beats them all! I hate ripping guidebooks apart, but there was no way I was going to carry the entire book on my travels!

I wish that they'd publish the book in a format that would make it easier to take it apart. That would make so much sense for such a heavy tome!

I agree on the weight of the Fodors Guidebooks. Just his past few weeks I ripped my Central and Eastern Europe apart so I only had to carry one city at a time.

I xerox pages I need when I travel. It is against my religion to tear books apart.

As noted above I do not know when the Spain book changed, but it is has become more sophisticated and it is not only for the first time visitor but a repeat visitor.

Also they stopped including meaningless quotes from posters on Fodors. And yes, I have been quoted numerous times in the past on other guides and received free books. But it smacked of pandering and lacked professionalism.

It should prob. say Fodor's Guide to Stop and Shop. Some of their stores are so big the shopper needs a guide.

I agree with you about those stupid quotes! With our stupid forum names! I, too, was quoted and got free books, but I, too, thought it was gimmicky.

I'm glad the Spain guide was so well updated. Maybe they'll refocus on the horse that brung 'em, and none too soon.

There are people HERE who "live in the country" and in some cases what they have said to others would make me not want to go anywhere near the place.

By the by, we are already seeing less attention paid to the online forums, which I think is a sign that Fodor's has not found them helpful to the bottom line. Leaving the online forum headaches to Trip Advisor and concentrating on guides again, in paper and e-format, could be the "new" strategy.

Before traveling with large, heavy full country guidebooks that have more info than I need, I took the advice of a poster here, Ira?, and had FedEx/ Kinkos cut the binding off. Then I chose the pages I needed for my trip and had them put it together with a an inexpensive binding. Doesn't cost much and you don't have to take the sections on the whole country along. We carry on so every inch counts.

HappyTrvlr, that's a trick birders have been using for ages: have a copy store cut out and rebind the plates only, then rebind the book. Works a treat! (Purists will buy two copies, one to keep whole, one to cannibalize.)
