Fodors: Can you add a notification feature?

I've noticed on some other message boards that it is possible to sign up to be notified by email when and if a response is posted to a thread you have posted to, either because you are the OP, or just a responder.
Does anyone besides me think this would be useful?

No, because I'm on here so often I can easily check. Just click on your own name and see the posts you started or ones that you've responded to and watch them that way.

yes, but clicking on your own name doesn't tell you that something NEW has been posted to that thread, unless you check it every time

E-mail this to [email protected] elaine. While they seem to have their hands tied, with regard to taking any actual (reparative) actions, I am hoping that they still have their ears open. I hear that they are "working on" a "substantial" overhaul.

The notification option ought to have a default of "on", for any first-time (ever) poster - - and it should include the URL of the thread in the e-mail notification.

Best wishes,

Rex

I (would) just use the "E-mail this thread" function.

In fact, e-mail it to yourself using that function, and you will see exactly what they get.

sorry rex, my last question wasn't clear

I emailed this thread to the editors.

But, in terms of desired notification, wouldn't the thread title be more useful than a mere url? I would know that "A question about Paris" (title)had a new posting.

Oh yes, I see - - and the answer would be both, in my opinion - - in fact, I'm sure this is how I get notifications on some other boards I frequent.

====================================

Your thread "xxx yyy zzz" has one or more new postings since you last logged in.

I don't care about notifications. I'd much rather have a decent search function and consistent indexing. being able to click on IDs to come up with other posts under that ID is a nice feature, but so many of the additons have been just cutesie frills, like the emoticons, while the primitive and unreliable search function limps along, with no signs of improvement,

All right, let me tell you all what a fool I was. I signed up for that notification, posted a question, got 2 answers on this website, 0 e-mails.

I'd rather see the search engine fixed first.

In some cases (when the &quot;newbie&quot; displays an e-mail address), we can do this <i>for</i> them...

Wow, Rex, you are such a sweet heart!

How many time do you spend, or plan to spend e-mailing everybody who has the e-mail displayed... and probably ending in the spam folder?

I don't know any more, Betsy.

As to your question, Faina, only once per registrant, on a first-time-ever posting.

When I first came to fodors (back in the mid-14th century) there was a feature just like that. But (surprise!) it didn't work. I never got any emails about new posts on my question, so I learned to check it myself.
