Flying within Turkey
Two quick questions regarding domestic flights within Turkey...
1. Any airline recommendations for domestic Turkey flights? Any airlines you would avoid - especially with regards to safety?
2. Regarding the 3oz liquid carry-on rule implemented by the TSA that we have here in the US and on flights to/from US - is it also applicable on flights WITHIN Turkey? Does domestic security check for this? Or, for example, if i fly from Istanbul to say Cappadocia area - will I be able to carry on a full size bottle of shampoo? (yes, I'm aware that flying to/from US to turkey, the 3oz liquid rule will apply to carry on)

We flew both Pegasus and Turkish Air and both werer fine. Pegasus is in the Ryanair model and TA is a world class airline where there is actually legroom and a meal.
Security is so tight that in most Turkish airports, you cannot even enter the airport without going through security.

1. Currently THY, the National carrier has problems with striking cabin attendants supported by maintenance and other ground personnel. The company, backed by the government is imposing very tough , rather dictatorial measures, including the promulgation of a new law banning strikes.
The labor union leader leaders were on TV saying that if the striking and supporting employees are fired as threatened, their replacements who will most probably be chosen among Islamic fundamentalist groups, will not be able to maintain the sophisticated machinery.
We have some free frequent flier tickets which we have to use but otherwise are actually afraid to use THY under the circumstances.
Pegasus is owned by the second largest conglomerate in Turkey and managed by one of the heirs and seems to be doing fine. Is also cheaper than THY. It is not a full service airline but has good leg room.
Other local airlines not connected to THY are Atlas, Onur and Bora. I am not sure if Sunexpress or Sky are connected. I know that Anadolu is connected to THY.

You can easily find reasonably priced shampoo and similar items in supermarkets and pharmacies wherever you go, and all 3 or 4 star hotels will supply shampoo and conditioner anyway. many markets and supermarkets will stay open till late hours in Turkey.

Otherchelebi- Do you think this strike will affect Turkish Airlines international flights at all?
We are scheduled on Turkish Airlines Dulles to Istabul in Sept. I probably do have an option to change carriers as I broked frequent flyer tickets but would need to make that change soon.

Just FYI, booking local airlines via the web is difficult with US credit cards. It is easier to use a travel agency. I booked with Aergus Travel and they were very helpful.
If you do try to book online, call your credit card first so they will accept the charge and select euros, not turkish liras as the currency. That worked for one airline only but not the other two.

problem in booking on-line with Turkish airlines occures with the type of telephone you use most of the time. Also, you cannot pay with Amex as the on-line system will not accept fewer credit card numbers.
The government, using their majority in the parliament immediately passed the law banning the right to strike for all airline personnel and staff, last night. This may mean that some qualified staff of THY will move to other airlines, but how many and what effects it will have on the dependability of THY remains to be seen.
I sincerely doubt that strike conditions will continue till September First, and I also think that you on that date and us on our October flights to and back from the United States should be fine in terms of safety.
About forty THY international flights were delayed or cancelled yesterday and 150 people were illegally fired immediately through messages sent to their cell phones.
Here's some strange logic for you :
The government justification for passing the law is, "Airline staff need to be highly qualified and very difficult to replace. If they are allowed to negotiate wages and threaten to strike, airlines will not be able to find replacement staff at similar wages/cost when they are fired. Therefore the current staff should not be given this opportunity for the benefit of the airlines and their customers. -
