Flying KLM to Holland? Rate please!
Flying direct to Amsterdam from San Francisco. I'd like to know if you have any tips: food, flight attendants, seating, movies (good or bad), safe, on time, etc. We can't figure out why they charge less? Same planes, same everything... or are we missing something that YOU know???

I assume you will be in economy class. I do about 20 segments on KLM every year. KLM are average. Safety is as good as all the major airlines. Service depends a lot on the crew; the young females and males are usually friendly and nice, the older females can be bitches. Seating (leg room) is average to slightly less than average. Movies: no personal video system, so you'll have to watch the big screen. Movie selection is usually good.
They are the only airline flying non-stop between San Francisco and Amsterdam which is a BIG plus.

I flew the SFO to Amsterdam flight on KLM. It was a quick flight considering. Not very memorable. Food was mediocre, couldn't sleep as usual. We ended up heading to the back of the plane to stand for 45 minute increments. Felt great to stretch out. When I flew in March, we found a $400 flight. I guess they are lower priced on average.

Amsterdam's airport Schiphol is one of the best in the world. Lots of shops. there is also a casino at the airport and many bars/cafes/resturants.

KLM is definitely not cheap for flights *from* Amsterdam. I guess that may be cheap from SFO as KLM partner with Northwest airlines and SFO is not a major NW hub.

We flew to Amsterdam to pick up a river cruise. Were supposed to be met at the airport and transferred. No one appeared, so on the advice of very helpful English speaking people at the Info Desk we took the train into Central Station. Was a snap and saved us about $30 (if I'm correct). At the station there are tons of taxis. Woudl suggest the train and then taxi to sights of interest.

At Schipol airport there is a tourist desk which arranges trips especially for people who are there for a long lay over. The will take you into the city and show you the sights, from what i remember it was very reasonable, and they will make sure you get back to the airport in time.

Schiphol Rocks.
TO address the original question: I have flown KLM numerous times trans-atlantic from Amsterdam to Boston or to Seattle. I can't say it was the highlight of my trips, but it is just fine. Standard. Pity they don't have the personal video systems like United or some BA flights, but I think it is worth it to fly direct!!
With a KLM ticket, the train ride to Amsterdam Central Station is FREE!!
At Schiphol there are some internet cafe`s and some very nice seating areas. Best of of, between 2 of the terminals (I can't recall off the top of my head) there is a place where you can get 10-20-30 minute chair massages...perfect!
It is such a great airport, never seems too crowded, some really nice shops (including a great grocery store which is perfect when coming back to Amsterdam knowing my fridge is empty).
