I would suggest flying to Rome and take the train to Florence. I explain you why: if you fly to Rome you can take the Eurostar which in 1 1/2 hrs will take you to Florence. There is a comfy shuttle train from Fiumicino Airport directly to Termini Station from where you will take the Eurostar train too. If you fly to Milan you can take the Eurostar but the journey time is 3 hrs more or less.

Libby, I agree with Batuffolina. In addition, when you are flying home, you will probably spend a night in the city you are departing from, and Rome would have more to offer than Milan.
Having said that, I will also tell you that several years ago we found flights into Milan less expensive than Rome, so if that concerns you check it out.

Good evening, Libby
might check into a connecting flite to
Firenze from Milano or Rome. Either
would save a good deal of transportation
time and the airport in Firenze is but
6 km out of town. Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..
