Florence to Lucca and Pisa

Hello Tuscany travelers! Shar and I are planning a return to Tuscany this April with a Florence-to-Lucca tour. We will fly into Florence and spend three days there before arriving in Lucca for three. We want to join a group boat and bus trip to Cinque Terra one of the Lucca days, and a Pisa (and south) car tour for another. We also want to reserve our third Lucca day to explore the city before returning to fly out of Florence after one final night there.

One question: has anyone had the experience of renting a car out of the town of Lucca? If so, where is the car depot located relative to the city walls? Thanks for your help...

hertz, avis, europcar, budget all have offices in Lucca.

There is no depot, but rather small offices scattered here and there.Google maps is your friend.
Never rented there, but I have other places in Italy. In Italy I rent through AutoEurope, which is a 3rd party broker who gives great rates and excellent customer service. You pay them, and they book the car with the company of your choice and give you a voucher you present to the rental car desk.

Not sure what you mean explore the city of Lucca.... the city to explore is within the walls and a car is a hinderance not an asset.

Thanks for the helpful info, J!
Sorry for the confusion. I meant to indicate that, mindful of the ZTL restrictions, we intend to explore Lucca on foot, parking the rental car outside the wall close to our hotel. That is a great tip re. using Google maps for parking locations. The Google satellite imagery also helps in that regard. Thanks again.

We have used AutoEurope for years, and we have never had any problems with them. Great customer service and reasonable rates.

Lucca is indeed walled in. Some great neighborhoods a half mile or so to rent an apartment and walk into town. Plus some great shops and restaurants with absolutely no tourists. The Bridge of the Devil, which is a must see for the area is an easy 25 min drive
