One more little comment re Accademia - the queues during the day are horrendous. But I'm guessing you have a few days in Florence, so go the Accademia later in the day when the tour groups have gone. We arrived at Accademia at about 5pm and only waited 10 mins or so to get in. From memory it's open until about 7pm and an hour is more than enough time.

Everyone has their favs. A few that I love that I don't think have been mentioned:
Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure
(You can buy a combined entry ticket with the nearby Accademia, but the better companion visit would be to the Medici Chapels.)

Archeology Museum for its Etruscan collection
Palazzo Medici Ricardi
Beautiful inner courtyard, a few lovely rooms, and the stunning Chapel of the Magi.

I could have done without visiting Boboli Gardens but the Pitti Palace was marvelous.
I don't know how I overlooked it before but on my third visit to Florence I discovered the Museo de Duomo and it is now a place I recommend every chance I get.
My husband climbed the Campanile and claims the views over to the Dome were breathtaking. Afforded him some unbelievable photos of the Duomo.
The view from Piazzale Michelangelo is priceless. While there, a visit to San Miniato church is a must see.
Santa Croce is not to be missed as is Medici Chapel.
Strolling through the Oltrarno offers up an experience different from the Duomo side of the river. You have glimpses into how the people from Florence live and where they shop and where they craft their wares.
How could one visit Florence and NOT see David in person.
As another poster said...gelato for me is absolutely the very best in Florence.
Eat pizza at Baldovinos (next to Santa Croce)it's the best!

I hate computers. I wrote an entire diatribe on things I loved & hated in 2 sep trips to Flotown... one keystroke on a laptop that needs updating = GONE. Grrrr...
http://www.smnovella.it/ was my OMG yes, visit!
Accademia = YES!
Il Ritrovo & Il Latini= restaurants ppl here love and are worthwhile.
Do the San Lorenzo market, but be prepared for the food portion if you have no clue where food really comes from.
Stay in near the train station if that's how you're arriving.
Do - Medici Palace (Pitti Palace!?) One of the greats in any EU country I've visited.
N0, don't bother = Uffuzi - great ancient art, but boring - NO fun factor.
No = b&b Peterson
No = waiting in line at Accademia, book ahead!
no = trying to buy on the Ponte Vecchio - prices were horrible & haggling was almost useless. depends on the economy I suppose...
Enjoy, it's a wonderous place. I hold back on calling it a city as it feels like a VERY packed medevial square, not a full city.

How I envy your October trips! David: you must see it. San Lorenzo church was a historical basis for the Medici influence in Florence. If you had no plans, and just wandered the streets, it would be the trip of a lifetime. But see David!
