florence hotels
Has anyone stayed at the hotel Brunelleschi? It is located in Centro Storico. Is this a good location as far as walking around in Florence to various sights and restaurants?

Any other recommendations for centrally located hotel to the train etc. ?

I stayed there for 3 nights in March. 1997. It is a very pretty hotel and the location is great. I had a single room, which was fairly small, but fine. The breakfast was fairly good and included in the cost of the room. The hotel staff was not very friendly. I think some travel groups use this hotel. I think I paid $79 a night and got the room through British Airways vacations. It was also recommended by a wine writer friend. It is an old church and prision that has been redone into a hotel.

I stayed at Villa la Massa in the Tuscan hills where they took us by van into the city and would pick us up. It was fabulous and I would most certainly do it the same way if I go back. Florence is noisy and polluted with poor exhausts on their vehicles. We loved the change of the lovely, historic villa and the food was divine.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Brunelleschi for 2 night in May. The hotel is traditional. Our room overlooked Via Calzaiuoli (a busy shopping street) and was fine, nothing fancy. the bathroom was better than expected and there wasn't really any noise. The breakfast was the best we had at an Italian hotel. We saw a tour come through but it didn't bother us. The staff was both friendly and helpful -- our bags didn't make it to Florence and they constantly checked in with the airlines. The front of the hotel is in a quiet courtyard -- it's charming. The location between the Duomo and the Uffizi was key. It's very conveniently located. I think it's a perfect place to stay. Forgot to mention the rooftop terrace with great view of the Duomo. It was $224.00 per night including tax and breakfast. I would absolutely recommend it. The only reason I would stay somewhere else is to check out the more hip accomadations of the Hotel Lungarno or the Savoy.

And we stayed at Albergo Scoti (tel 055 292 128) on Via Tornabuoni (the famous shopping street) and payed < USD 50 / night for a double in Aug 2000 !

The hostess was extremely charming and the most hospitable that we have ever come across.

Another vote for Albergo Scoti. We stayed there in June of 2005, loved it! Room for 2 with private bath was 95 Euros,a very nice breakfast delivered to our room was an extra 5 euros per person. Doreen, the owner, is a fantastic person, very helpful and knows her city.
