I'm a single female and on the advice of Ira on this board I stayed there in November. I never felt unsafe. The area is not in the center of other hotels or many restaurants but for the price I thought it was fine. A 5 minute walk to the train station and if you can figure out the bus schedule a bus stops right at the front door. I walked everywhere in Florence and compared to the walking I did in Rome this was a breeze. You do pass a really nice bakery/cheese shop on your home in the evenings. But Ira is the expert. I just wanted to chime in regarding safety, etc.

Hi jck,
The Peterson is located on a broad, well lighted, well traveled street.
When we walked back from the train station at night, we found no cause for alarm in the 10 nights we were there.
When you exit the train station onto Via L.Alamanni go across the street and turn right. That way, you walk up the street with the station on your right and avoid the parked motorcycles. It is also easier to cross the streets.
