Hi: I stayed at the Concordia in Venice and really liked it alot. The staff was friendly and it was in a great location right off of San Marco Square. Venice is fairly safe anyway and has a low crime rate, so you won't have to worry about that for your daughter. I don't know about Florence. The hotel I booked I hated and checked out the same day. You can check on hotel sites and see what's around. Florence is relatively safe also and there really are alot of nice places in the City close to everything. Good luck

Hi,
I stayed in the Hotel Il Perseo (Florence), right next door to the Bapistery and felt totally safe. I just checked and they have single rooms available for next week. Here's the URL:

In Venice I stayed at HOTEL LA FORCOLA in Cannaregio area, right on strada Nuova. Lovely little hotel, buffet breakfast. Here is their web site but it is better to contact them directly to see if they have got special fares. http://www.laforcolahotel.com

Those Venice hotels are all lovely for location (I can't comment on the interiors however). We stayed at La Calcina, which is a bit further away from the crowd. However reservations at this late date may be a problem almost anywhere.

Not everyone makes their reservations months in advance. Although it's probably ideal to reserve in advance, some people enjoy backpacking or just "winging it." Her daughter might be a student doing a little traveling between semesters. Even Rick Steves in his book says that he always travels during peak season and only calls ahead to hotels a day or two before he arrives.

That is not what I read. Regardless, everyone has their own way of doing things.
After all that, I meant to tell Karen that we are staying at the Bernardi-Semenzano next week. There are a lot of posts about it on this board. It is a budget hotel and the couple that owns it is supposed to speak English and be very helpful. We did make reservations in Venice but from there we will be in Italy another week with no reservations. I'll have to let you know how it turns out.

May I ask why your daughter had such a terrible time in Paris? We are leaving for Italy next week but we were going to stop over in Paris for one day/one night. Wondering now if we should we rethink this and go straight to Venice?
