Floods in Czech Republic
Hi,
I just heard that there has been flooding in the Czech Republic last week, and some people were killed. Does anyone know how bad the flooding is? Does it compare to the floods of 2002? Is there a lot of damage and has the rain stopped? We leave for Prague on August 1so I'm a little concerned. Seems like it is raining everywhere. We live in the U.S., in Massachusetts, & it's been raining for most of June.
Thanks for any updates.

Check out the Prague Post -- English language newspaper, available online.
We visited about 7 months after the Vltava flooded Prague in 2002 and the city was in great shape for tourism even though countless residents were still coping with the aftermath to some degree.

I have not heard about any recent floods, but will email a couple of friends in Prague and ask them if anything is happening.
I was in Prague during the floods of 2002 actualy ariving in the city whilst they were evacuating the Old Town.things were really bad then,so much so that they had to euthanase the elephant at the zoo because they could not get it out because of the floods. All the main bridges over the Vlatava river were closed for several days and very few opened after that, place was like a ghost town.I had never seen it so quiet before or since. The Charles bridge took some damage and there are ongoing repairs to the bridge at the moment.
I very much doubt things will get that bad and the flood defenses in the city are much improved though if flooding does take place it may restrict your movement either side of the river.
I will see what I can find out and let you know or ask this question on the Trip Advisor forum where there are many locals that can keep you up to date with the situation.

From Cesky Krumlov visitor site:
Come to Český Krumlov Without Any Concerns! Dear visitors to the town,
the water level of the Vltava river in Český Krumlov has reached the 1st stage of the flood activity (awareness degree). However this does not significantly limit or threaten the tourist activities in the town.
All river-related activities are limited, such as sailing the river on canoes, rafts and on historical flatboats.
Depending on the weather, some cellars in the town center may be flooded and river may spill out at some spots.
Come the the beautiful Český Krumlov without any concerns!
You will have a great time as long as you observe the following recommendations:
- It is strongly recommended not to sail the river at this time
- We also advise against walking in the proximity of the river banks - a strong current may sweep you away
- We do not recommend parking your vehicle close to the river
- Sailing down the Vltava and other flooded rivers is extremely dangerous in the present conditions

Hello everyone,
Thank you so much for all the replies. I couldn't find anything on the Prague Post. Because someone at work told me about the flooding, I did a google search and did find an article that the floods started June 25. Several people have died. But hopefully the situation shoujld be better by August 1.

last night TV Nova news said the river was "full" but they do not believe Prague will flood. parts of the Czech Republic have indeed flooded and at least 13 people have died. I was in Cesky Krumlov Sunday and the river was very high but the city was under no threat and there were many rafters etc.
