I am considering a flight in June from Nice in France to Naples in Italy via Rome airport. The initial flight is with Air France with a 55 minute connection in Rome to an Alitalia flight
to Naples. When we check in, in Nice we will consign our luggage through to Naples.
This is the most convenient flight on that day and shows as a connecting flight. My concern is that even if we make the connection OK in Rome will our baggage also make it.
Has anyone had any experience with this itinerary and can advise me?

I think this is more of a risk management issue. I have not taken this route, but if we postulate three people responded this way:

1. The passenger and the luggage made it on time.
2. The passenger did, but the luggage got delayed.
3. Neither the passenger nor the luggage made it.

What are you going do differently? You will unlikely to get statistically significant number of responses. But even it you get overwhelming oks, but in your particular case, the luggage did not make it, then how did the overwhelming responses help you? I think the relevant action is to modulate the amount of carry-on to reflect the perceived chance of missing the flight. If the chance is deemed high, max out the carry-on allowance to be able to survive easily without checked luggage. If the chance is deemed low, still carry-on enough things, such as one change of clothes that match with what you are wearing, so that you are still ok even if your luggage does not arrive on time. Many people put all the eggs in one-basket in a binary all-or-nothing proposition, and end up with no change of clothes at all if the luggage get delayed. Some people even put all the essential medicine in checked luggage even though the airline web pages tells them don't put essential items in the checked luggage unless they are the prohibited carry-on items.

You can also check http://www.blu-express.com They fly direct from Nice to Rome (FCO) for as little as 35 euros but not every day. It's a no frills operator so luggage fee is extra. From FCO it's possible to reach center of Naples by train in as little as 2 hrs 7 min (with transfer in Rome). Check schedules on http://www.trenitalia.com, choose "Tutti Treni" tab, "Fiumicino Aeroporto" in from box & "Napoli Centrale" - in to.

Yes - but they could do this with the Alitalia flight as well - take train to Naples. They seem to want fly the whole way.

Air France and Alitalia are codeshare partners and are part of Skyteam meaning that your bags are interconnected along with your reservation. You are arriving and leaving out of the domestic terminal, I assume so I think that you will be fine. If there is a hiccup along the line, the fact that they are codeshare partners puts the blame on those two carriers not you. Discount airlines aren't always the right answer for connecting,trust me!

Actually EasyJet flies directly from Nice to Naples but not every day so if OP is flexible that'll probably be the best option.

I wasn't suggesting to take another flight but take a train. Combination of discount flight & advance purchase ticket may be more cost effective than AF/Alitalia flight & time to get to Naples is somewhat comparable. Not taking second flight reduces the risk of misplaced luggage. We flew Blu Express once; very unmemorable experience (no seat assignment like Easyjet & luggage charge) but for 1 hr flight I didn't care.
