First Trip to Ukraine

Hi everyone,

I'm planning my first trip to Ukraine later this year and would really appreciate some current, practical advice from people who have been recently or live there.

I'm thinking of visiting Kyiv, Lviv, maybe Odesa or Carpathians if time allows. My rough plan is 10–14 days, mostly city + a bit of nature.

What are the absolute must-do things right now (food, hidden spots, experiences, cheap transport tricks, etc.)? And on the flip side — what should I absolutely avoid (scams, unsafe areas, tourist traps, things that used to be okay but aren't anymore, cultural faux pas, etc.)?

Thank you so much in advance — any honest, up-to-date tips would be super helpful!

Safe travels to everyone

I thought I read somewhere that many parts of the countryside were unsafe for travel....maybe even some roads cut..here you go:

About the faux pas, you probably should not wear camouflage clothing, even though some of those shirts are very on trend this season..

Can't help with the cheap transport tricks, though..sorry..

Hello and welcome to Fodors. What an interesting first post.

I see you haven't watched the news in 4 years. Where do you live?

This can't be a serious post surely?
Odessa was flattened by Russia, Kyiv is being flatten by Russia.
Hidden spots? Bomb shelters perhaps.

People do travel from Europe to Ukraine, risking their lives to take food and medicines and clothing and other aid. They do not go there for the fun of it.

Welcome to Fodors -- if there is a remote chance is a legit question . . . Make plans to go somewhere else. Unless you plan on enlisting in the Ukraine Army, or bringing relief supplies, your presence wouldn't be useful/helpful.

If on the other hand this is a troll first post . . .go jump in a lake.

And this post is also cruel, cold-hearted, and mocking to the Ukrainian people.

I work for a company that does business in Ukraine and I know of many who have traveled there. Also, a friend of mine is the director for a theatre company that performed at a theatre festival recently in Ukraine. So I do believe this is a legit question. Though I personally am not considering going.

Ukrainians need weapens in order to defence their hospitals, nurseries, schools, electricity plants and trains again Russian drones and rockets: not tourists.
BTW: as a result of the destruction of electricity plants by Russia, the actual temperature in many hotels is actually about 20 degrees centigrade below zero.
But it's not forbidden to visit Ukraine.

Travel insurance likely useless - travel to a war zone.

There is a religious sect in Judaism which continues to visit Ukraine every year to carry out their devotions. They visit Uman in September.

Other than that then this is a painful "joke" post.

Polish passport holders don't need a visa.
You can bring in up to €10,000 cash with a verbal declaration.
As mentioned, all medical and travel insurance becomes null and void once you cross the border.
In Odesa, most of the points of interest are near the Odesa Stairs; Museum of Western and Eastern Art, Archelogical Musem.
Odesa Regional Philharmonic is still performing.

BTM, If you are a movie buff, watch "Battleship Potemkin", compare the stairs scene to the one in "The Untouchables"

I think this comes down to: Travel to Ukraine may be possible, but is it advisable? My news feeds today included an article and photo of an Odessa market bombed by drone yesterday. A market in a public area that a tourist might want to explore.

I suppose if you went and made it home in one piece, the brag potential or middle-finger-to-Putin value is off the charts.
