First trip to Provence
Will be travelling to Provence in September, what town or village would you recommend as home base (will be there for about 4 days) (have been "considering Orange or Tarascon"), also can you supply B&B/Hotel names in these towns which are located in town, range of 70-100 Euros. Please include e-mail, phone or fax if possible.

Margot,

You are asking for a lot. However, I'd suggest something further south than Orange. There is a great Roman ampithater and an arch in Orange, but not much else.

I'd suggest Avignon or Arles. Both are big enough to have some diversions but small enough to walk around, for the most part. We stayed in Avignon for 10 days last September and made day trips to the Luberon, Arles, Chateauneuf du Pape, Orange Pont du Garde etal.

Search on the web for Provence and you will run inot all the hotels in that price range you will ever need.

US

We stayed in Orange and Aix on our visit to Provence two years ago. We choose Orange as the first stop as we drove from Amboise and it seemed to be a good choice as a starting point. I wouldn't discount Orange as we enjoyed our three nights there. We used the daytime to venture out to other areas except for a half a day to see the Roman amphitheatre, museum, etc. In Aix we stayed at Mas de Entremont which is actually just north of the city and worked well for us as we used this as a base to explore. We didn't care much for Aix as it was too big but you will find opposing views on this if you search on this site.
