Of course the OP doesn't have to explain anything to anyone.>
ditto that - and hope OP does not feel intimidated by our queries - no hidden agendas - just curious - and the crowds can be daunting in summer making it rather unpalatable for first-time visitors seeking to see the main super crowded things. Much the same could be said on Florence in summer - Rome with much more real estate with sights spread out is not nearly so clogged with tourists except at a few places like the Trevi Fountain or Colosseum areas.
But yes no need to answer or explain and no more will be said on the matter here.

Trying to reconcile three things:
1. OP has an Interest in architecture
2. The OP has no interest in Venice
3. The Architecture Biennale in Venice will be running in October 2016
However, that might not be the sort of architectural stuff tht the OP is interested in. Or maybe the OP was not aware that the Biennale would be running during their visit.

Hi all
Thanks again for all your input. Regarding Venice, I was not aware that the Biennale was happening - and don't even know what that is . I will check it out to satisfy my curiosity but I am still not likely to visit Venice. No offense to anyone who loves Venice; I am just more interested in other places
@juliewo I will definitely check out Umbrio! Since I haven't been to any place in Italy, I am sure all will be a joy

Umbria - Perugia, Assisi, Todi, and lots more lovely hill towns - all reachable by train and bus from Florence or make great bases in themselves - going by train around Italy - check www.seat61.com for ideas on discounted tickets and for general train info and lots on places to go www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
