Have you read Eat, Pray, Love? The whole first section is about a woman who spends several months in Italy by herself. I wasn't wild about the book, but it will give you a perspective of someone who was there.

if you are going alone and staying such a long time, it might be a good idea to learn some Italian ( if you don't speak it already).
You might even consider taking a 3-4 week course in Italy ,if you are "based" somewhere for a while!

I think learning (or brushing up) your Italian is excellent advice. Even a few sessions with a private tutor, since you're leaving fairly soon.
I don't think there's any reason to rent a car (I am not comfortable doing that alone in Europe myself) for what you have in mind.
