If you are looking for a break in between the museums in Amsterdam, consider the Albert Cuyp outdoor market; it's an easy walk. There are plenty of vendor choices to graze for lunch, and also sit-down options at the storefronts along the street.

In Paris we had some great tours with Paris Walks: http://www.paris-walks.com. I suggest you pick out a few that interest you and you can plan your neighborhood wanderings around them.

I also recommend the book "Discover Paris by Metro" -- it describes items of interest near many of the metro stations and would also be a good starting point for exploring neighborhoods.

Big Russ, you are right, you know you are right and I know you are right. I wasn't poopooing anything or anyone. But I do think the OP should go and see the memorial, we all should.

Just a note on that memorial and the other smaller ones around Paris (see them on street corners, see them in parks, they are there). The French Police helped round up the Parisian Jews. To their shame the British Police helped round up the British Jews on Jersey/Guernsey (though luckily nearly all had left) but they did round up other people and send them off. I suspect if the Nazis had got to America the American Police would have.....

You have to think who else would have been selected after the Jews, the Gays, the Roma, the Intellectuals, the deformed, the mentally retarded, the communists, the socialists, the preachers, the people who had wealth but wouldn't give it to someone in the party (because that were their "crimes") etc etc. So basically anyone.

Why go? Because it helps you spot the next crazy one who comes along. Forgetting what happened is stupid. But not learning is even more stupid. Did I mention ISIL yet?

Fishnlines, sorry this is not helping your holiday plans.

You decide what you want to visit. Paris is a nice small city you'll love it whatever you do. Do look out the Fat Tires (sic) website they do a bike tour of town and a segway tour with added commentary. Well worth it for the fun alone

And I want to know who really calls The Eye "the Ferris Wheel" on the Thames.>

calling a spade a spade: (Wiki)

A Ferris wheel, named after George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., (sometimes called a big wheel, observation wheel, or, in the case of the very tallest examples, giant wheel) is a nonbuilding structure consisting of a rotating upright wheel with multiple passenger-carrying components (commonly referred to as passenger cars, cabins, capsules, gondolas, or pods) attached to the rim in such a way that as the wheel turns, they are kept upright, usually by gravity.

Sounds like a Ferris Wheel to me - how about you?

Thanks Dukey & PalenQ - def will try Harrod's to see the food court, i was considering the dungeon but after reading reviews on it, it does seem to be quite a disappointment to most since the revamping, so I decided to skip it. Thanks for reminding me about the Transport Museum - I do want to make a note to pop in when we're in Covent Garden; and I think i'm booking Mousetrap (my kid's a teen actually)

Bilboburgler - no worries, I don't mind the banter and I do find it helpful, you have to listen to all and gleam what makes sense to you! And thank you - I love your suggestions for Paris - monuments/D'Orsay/river ride/place with a view - I'm in.

Jamikins - if you're saying we can do the Borough Market on a Monday, can we kill 3 hours in that area on a Monday when it's not bustling? maybe pop in the Cathedral? Also I understand there is a pub down there from the Harry Potter movies - thought my daughter would love to take a photo in front of that - maybe even stop in for a drink.

hetismij & GinnyJo - got my Amsterdam tix for all 3 museums! I'm good to go and thanks for the suggestions on where to go in between

Well, when I tell my friends I might go to the London Eye, I usually have to explain it's a ferris wheel!! Anyone been up the Shard? I'm thinking of doing that instead, it's cheaper and higher!!

The clever thing about the London eye is that unlike many Ferris wheels which are made up of structural members that are in "compression" (like say the Eifel tower), the Eye is made up of cables in "tension" (like a bicycle wheel) which makes for a lighter and lower inertia wheel. This alows people to see "through" the centre hence the term "eye"

Bilbo, I agree about visiting the memorial. I've visited other areas that had . . . impacts. There is definite value in that.

As for this: "I suspect if the Nazis had got to America the American Police would have..." - that outcome would have been all too likely. The Man in the High Castle is compelling alternate history, not just baseless fiction . . .

I think Philip Roth's "Plot Against America" is much more "realistic", in that respect.
