I really want to stay in Fife but all the self catering units large enough for six people require three nights. We are not golfers. We love walking on the beach and plan to go to May Island. My fear is if it is rainy for three days my family might turn on me. Any thoughts?

There's MASSES to do in Fife. Castles and palaces, and ancient villages and gardens, and birdwatching, and an ancient university and its abbey, and you're within easy striking distance of Perth (and Dundee, if you're nuts enough). You won't run out of wet weather entertainment.

Don't you own waterproofs?

Thanks Sheila. We did book it. We will be in Elie for three nights. I like having a home base rather than trying a new town each night.
No we don't all have waterproofs.I lucked up and found a full length goretex raincoat for myself. I'm keeping an eye out for the kids.

In early summer you'll be very unlucky if you have any serious rain. Be prepared for light showers, remember that skin is waterproof(!)and enjoy yourselves. On a good day, walk along the shore south from Elie and Earlsferry, there are some magical spots here if you are tuned in enough to recognise them.

Oh good. I did order a raincoat for my daughter.
Preparation is the best insurance.
Oh and yes it does rain here in South Carolina. We are just so used to driving rather than walking so it doesn't bother us.

You know my last comment makes us sound like couch potatoes. Our whole point in going to Fife is walking. I just hope it is pleasant weather.

You'll love Fife no matter the weather. Much more to see/do than possible in your short stay.

•The Old Course (even for non-golfers it is a sight to see)
•Falkland Palace/gardens
•A boat trip to the Isle of May - amazing place w/ an abandoned village, 3 light houses, and mostly sea birds including <u>puffins</u>
•Great walks like up the Lomond hills above Falkland
•Hill of Tarvit House
•All the fishing villages
•Great seafood

And that is just the short list . . . .

A comment regarding the Old course. As an avid golfer I don't think of the old course as special to look at. It really resembles a cow or sheep pasture. Now having said that, as a golfer, its like being in Westminster Abbey or St. Pauls. VERY, very special...as close to a religious experience that I can get to.

The West Sands that runs along the first few holes, the view back towards the town and the R&A from the Road hole fairway, and from the bridge over the swilkin burn. Especially on a Sunday when it is open to all to stroll w/o dodging golf balls - then it is really just a large, open, seaside public park.

If one has absolutely NO interest in golf at all I suppose it could be a miss, but even if one has only watched a bit of the Open Championship . . . .

I'm back and I can report NO rain! Our favorite part of the trip was the Isle of May. We took a ferry out to an island on the Firth. The island was a rock studded refuge for birds and other wild life. We saw thousands of birds. I loved watching the grey seals. If you are interested the ferry leaves from Ansthruther.

We stayed at Elie. It was a nice village with a good village and a small quay. One note: Be sure to buy toilet paper prior to 5:30 p.m.! We didn't realize that we were nearly out until the shops had closed.
