Few days in the Black Forest - Germany
So a few friends and I are planning to go to the Black Forest, Germany at the end of the month, leaving from Hamburg.
We are students so we have classes on most of the days during the week, but can be flexible if need be.
I believe there are two public holidays on the 31st October and the 1st November, therefore we are looking to go around these dates.
How long is it recommended to stay in the Black Forest and what is there that we must see?
Also, if coming from Hamburg, what is the best way to come in and where to stay?

The Black Forest is an outdoors-sort-of-place - but it's not so popular at the end of October on account of the weather, and the fair-weather sights and attractions tend to be very few in number. It's also a long trip. Why did you choose the Black Forest exactly, if you aren't sure what's there? What sort of experience are you looking for, exactly? There are plenty of places you can escape to from Hamburg at that time of year that are closer and perhaps more interesting but interesting depends on your interests (heh heh.)

Best way to come from Hamburg is of course by train -to Freiburg, where you can change to sidelines into the heart of the Black Forest. Book tickets ASAP at www.bahn.de/en - German Railways site -easy to book own discounted tickets (if available) but much cheaper than just buying on day of travel. Check www.seat61.com for insights on that and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com for things about trains in general.

I think the Black Forest is popular because it is famous - it is nice but IME of taking trains thru it not living up to its fame. The Harz Mountains nearer Hamburg could give an equally nice walking place.
Titisee is a poluar area for easy hiking and is accessible by train:

IME Titisee is a tourist trap and really nothing special.
The Black Forest is lovely but a very long way for a weekend and not much besides the great outdoors which may not be ok at end October.
The Harz OTOH is reasonably close to Hamburg and there are lots of castles and interesting towns to explore as well as the steam train to the top of the Brocken - the highest mountain in the northern half of Germany.
