I'm glad others see the benefit of multiple guidebooks. I however don't, and it's as simple as that.
Madame Perdu - neither of us is right or wrong, we just have different methods of researching our trips.
What I can never understand on this forum is the way some people take it as a personal slight if someone doesn't agree with their preferred method/location/style of travel. What always seems to follow is the next comment degenerating into some kind of electronic pissing contest where the offended party's latest/next/current trip is some sort of independent yak ride to machu picchu using only the wind and local flora as a guide.
Adee - I wouldn't be surprised if you don't re-post but if you do feel like it, let us know if you need any tips. There's a wealth of knowledge on this site and not all of us think we have to belittle people to impart it.

there are soooo many hotels and sooo many good hotels in paris that is seems to be a bit surprising to list a few of them. Each one have a different atmosthere and finally it depends which kind of atmosphere you are looking for ! (peaceful, romantic...)
Just a few area to avoid for your first stay :
- in the 10th around gare du nord / gare de l'est
- in the 18th around "la goutte d'or"
- in the 17th around the ring road
- in the 19th
Have a great stay in Paris.
