Feedback on NorthWest Airlines, please

I've never flown NorthWest, but they're running some good fares USA to Europe. I'd appreciate feedback on your experiences with them--any aspects of their performance.

By the way, I did a search, but didn't come up with anything recent or specific.

Thanks so much.

I flew Portland to Paris/Amsterdam to Portland in September via Northwest. Every flight was on time, no lost bags, service was fine. I got a great fare, too, so I was extremely satisfied with Northwest.

Andrew
I flew Northwest on Saturday, Amsterdam to Washington. Everything went fine. The film screen was fuzzy, but that was about it as far as problems went.

As a former NWA employee I can safely say that Northwest is everybit as good as any US carrier. Every airline has bad performance days, due to their complexity and size but overall Northwest does everything the same as any other with no major hidden difficulties.

Remember that many of Northwest's European fares are actually codeshares with KLM. KLM is a wonderful airline! Great food, fantastic service, etc!

Thanks SO much for all the great feedback. They're offering $330 RT from Cincinnati to London in late February, early March. That's by far the best fare I've found from the midwest.

Thanks again!

I worship NorthWest -- my boyfriend and I are flying to Paris for a long Thanksgiving weekend from Washington, DC for a $185.00 base fare each! Amazing!

Well, slight coward that I am (okay, I really only like to hedge my bets), I think I'll pass on this deal because the flight, of course, goes through Detroit and that's not a great time of year to fly out of Detroit! I hadn't thought about that originally. By the way, I found this thru Travelocity. NW Web site was quoting $602 for the same flights.

At least now I know enough to give NW a chance on future flights--thanks!

I flew Northwest/KLM from Amsterdam to San Francisco and back again. The outbound flight on KLM was good, although long. The return flight, however, on Northwest was pretty uncomfortable, even though we took a layover in Minneapolis. The seats were narrower and there was less leg room on the Northwest flights, including the plane from Minneapolis to Amsterdam.

I know this is the europe board, but i flew northwest to new mexico a couple of weeks ago. when i went to come home, i went to check in at northwest only to find their counter closed at 3:00 sunday afternoon. I hadn't checked my tix carefully, so didn't realize my return flight was through Continental. Got the flight to Houston, but about ten of us missed the connector to Baltimore because they wouldn't hold the flight for five minutes. Then they blamed it on weather and wouldn't pay for our hotels for the night. I don't know who to blame for this incident.

NMA is my favorite airline to Europe, but mostly with their relationship with KLM. I love the AMsterdam airport as it is like your local mall with airline gates off of it. You can buy anything. Interesting people everywhere. i am on my way the same week to Salzburg and out of Budapest. Have fun.

Northwest is much improved during the past 10 years and doesn't deserve being called Northworst.

I've never had any complaints with Northwest and I've flown them almost exclusively to Europe.

Detroit is probably not as bad for weather as Pittsburgh, and the new terminal for NW/KLM is excellent, just got rated third best in US. We will be flying to Barcelona using KLM from Detroit in January, and from our past trips out of here in winter, the weather and airline are the least of our worries

Mel,

I have flown NWA several times and found them comparable to other US airlines. I have one nightmare incident to share, but it wasn't all their fault (partly...)

I agree with your concern about Detroit. Last January, I got a cheap fare on NWA from DC to Tampa, through Detroit (OK, that was probably stupid on my part, it seemed ridiculous, but it was really cheap!). Anyway, we were late leaving DC because of mechanical problems (this part is their fault), so we were going to miss our connection to Tampa. While sitting on the runway in DC, we used our cell phone to rebook ourselves on a later flight, but going into Orlando instead, which was our actual destination, (don't ask). When we got to Detroit, the weather was lousy. We checked to make sure our lugguge would follow us to Orlando instead of Tampa (which they assured us it would, but of course it didn't - this part is also their fault, because they swore it would follow us). Then, when we finally boarded the plane to Orlando, we had to de-ice the plane, so we left an hour late (not their fault). Got to Orlando, 6 hours later than expected (like, midnight), no luggage, and no rental car (because we were supposed to pick it up in Tampa, originally.

Long winded, but the key lesson is that I will never book through Detroit (or any other northern city) in winter again!

BTW, we made our cruise out of Tampa the next day, with our luggage, so it all worked out in the end. And, on the way back, we connected in Memphis and had absolutely no problems!

Karen

Hello, Mel!
Northwest used to have the worst on time record in the industry and has worked to overcome this. As far as being different from the other carriers, I haven't noticed anything. They all have their good and bad points.

I have flown out of Minneapolis to Europe probably a dozen times in March, and December, and never had a delay.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy that fare.
I personally love Icelandair. They are one of my favorite airlines with ample space, better food than any I have had, and great rates. I just received an email with rates of 268$ RT from Mpls to London. It may be worth checking out.

Lucky you! Wish I were going with you!
