Yes it is always preferable to stay the night before in the city you are flying from BUT I can recall at least twice where I did not do that. The first was spending our last night in Bruges and having out flight out of Paris at 11am. The second time was leaving Capri island for a 1pm flight in Rome.

I did have a plan B (part of it was to use airmiles for a last minute ticket one way to the USA; I have various options) For these two occasions, the risk of missing my flight was less than wanting to enjoy one more night where I wanted. Both times I got up long before sunrise to start my journey back to the airport. I factor in a two hours delay/unexpected events.
