FCO airport, Rome

We will be flying out of FCO this month on a Delta/Alitalia code share flight. I've heard that FCO can be idiosyncratic and often chaotic. Our flight leaves at 10 am. How many hours should we allow from campo dei fiori to FCO to travel, check in, and relax a bit before the flight? We don't mind waiting when the alternative is sweating bullets to get to the flight on time. (as we have done at CDG on several occasions). We also leave on a Saturday morning - if that makes any difference.

I would allow an hour to get to FCO from your hotel as traffic is always bad in the morning assuming you are using a limo or taxi. You will be needing to be dropped off at terminal 5 which is the terminal that all departing USA flights clear ticketing and customs, etc. You will then get on a shuttle bus right outside and ride over to terminal 3 which is where the flights all leave from, dutyfree shops and restaurants, etc.
Now that they moved security to terminal 5 ,the screening is way faster for all of the passengers.
If you want time to check out the shops and grab a bite at FCO, I would schedule leaving your hotel at around 645am or 700am.They usually start boarding flights about an hour out of departure time.

Yup, allow 3 hours minimum, more if you really do want some time to check out shops and grab a bite.

Find out if you are flying on an Alitalia airplane or on a Delta airplane. If Alitalia the you will be departing from T3. If Delta then you'll be departing from T5. T5 is only used for departure for US-flagged airlines and El Al. This topic has been hashed out in a few threads not long ago. It is a mystery to me why misinformation was still been dispensed.

Our flight documents specify a Delta flight number and underneath it says "operated by Alitalia". It also specifies terminal 3. So I am assuming that we go to Terminal 3 directly. I think I will call Alitalia to make sure!

Do call the airlines to clarify. If it is at terminal 5, they don't even open the flight for check-in until exactly 3 hours before the flight and security does not open until 7am.

I just came back from Rome and was on a 10am Alitalia also on a Saturday. Check in for the flight was in terminal 3 and I arrived at about 6:40am. I waited in line for my boarding pass about 15 minutes. As I waited the line behind me grew quite a bit. When I arrived at the check in counter only 2 desks were open but more agents were arriving and setting up. The line I was in was for passengers on the Newark, JFK and Chicago flights. After I checked in the line for security took about 15 minutes also. I imagine that people who arrived later waited a bit longer due to the volume of passengers going through the process. I had plenty of time to look through the shops and get a bite to eat. My flight left from the G gates which you access by a short train ride. There isn't much to do at the G gates so don't be too anxious to get to the gate if you are leaving from there. I am not sure you can get back in the main terminal once you go there. Once I went to the G gates I put my backpack in a cart and managed to walk 3.5 miles as I went around and around the gate area.

Thank you for all of your responses. I think we will get a cab from Campo dei Fiori to FCO. We plan to leave at 6 am.
