Indeed not. 200 Euros in those major cities will just about get you a lower-end 3* hotel, certainly not a posh one.

Okay maybe "Posh" is an overstatement. How about chic?

While not posh, the Villa Real in Madrid is a really, really nice hotel. They used to offer weekend specials which may be in your price range. Check it out.

In Paris, you'll have to settle for clean.

Define the term "chic" and you might get some useful information...emphasis on the word "might."

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel St. Germain in '02 and liked it a lot. Very nice interior, in the 6th, close to everything you'd want to see and rue de bac is a wonderful street.

What's the definition of posh? You can get a nice business-style 4* hotel for that price in Paris or Madrid for under 200 Euros - often well under 200 Euros.

Someone reported getting the Ritz in Madrid recently for a price of 195 Euros/night.

For Rome, this is probably much more difficult.

Not super posh, but with a certain elegance:

Hotel le Sainte Beuve (6eme)
Hotel de Banville (17eme)

Both in Paris.

Would you believe Zürich?

We got into a huge (must have been 30 sqm) twin double at the Marriott last summer for €185 including a 6-course breakfast! We got it because of our Rewards status, so make sure you always tell the reservationist you're a member when you call your favorite chain.

Sorry I made an overstatement with the word "posh" on this posting.

I guess I'm looking for chic - attractive and stylish (whether it's modern or classic), and not necessarily luxurious.

These are all great recommendations so far.

In Rome, I would recommend Residenza Farnese: a beautiful small hotel (for your budget), in a very central (yet quiet) location. Here's their website - CALL them after you've checked a few boking sites. Their "rates" area on the website is under construction.

Into the fray, I'll boringly toss in my suggested Hotel Relais du Louvre. Pretty rooms; comfortable beds; superb staff; great coffee and breads brought in the morning; for me, Ideal location.
(OK, I'll admit, tiny shower but the rest of the bathroom was nice.)

I wonder what the George V will be like? You know, when hell freezes over and I've won the lottery ... <GRIN>

In Paris, you can find rooms under 200 a night at the Sofitel Le Parc, Sofitel Dokhan's (both in the 16th) and Sofitel Le Faubourg (in the 8th). All three are very nice four star hotels (Dokhan's is the most chic, featured in some recent travel magazines and it has a very smart, stylish champagne bar) with rack rates easily reaching 400+ euros per night --BUT if you travel off season and keep checking the Sofitel or Accor Hotels web sites, you can often find rooms available for under 200 euros per night, including breakfast.

If I spent 200 euros ($340 in my money) a night on a hotel, and it was anything LESS than extraordinarily posh, I'd cry.
Fact is, though, I wouldn't spend that much. A clean, comfortable, homely hotel or B&B is all I require, and it leaves me more to spend on seeing and doing.

One big question is, what time of the year? Some very nice hotels in Paris don't have a/c; so in the summer, they're less desirable for anyone who wants to stay cool. In other months, the Danube would be quite pleasant.

BTilke, based on your recommendation, I've been repeatedly checking on the Sofitel LeParc, which looks fabulous to me, for my upcoming trip in August. Although they do have a non-refundable special price of 180 euros, it's still too steep for me. I'll keep checking. Thanks for the recommendation!

I used Priceline and spent three nights at the Novotel with a view of the Eiffel Tower from my room for 100 USD a night. This was in January of 2004. Best rate at the hotel was 240 Euros a night and this was posted a a special rate on the sign at the front desk upon check in.
