Thin gets extra points for the Ambrose Price reference.
I'm Canadian and I don't wear Keds. And I definitely don't put Canadian flag pins or patches on my stuff!
I live in a city and apart from normal caution I don't worry about being robbed or pickpocketed; why would I behave differently in Europe? I just use my regular purse when I go there, and make sure it's closed and close to me as I do at home. At various times these have been a DKNY black nylon messenger bag and a Brown's tote that looks a bit like a Birkin bag with longer handles and less hardware. At the moment I am using a large-ish black Ferragamo that I carry in the crook of my arm. But I spend most of my time shopping, in museums, walking in neighbourhoods... and even if I don't quite know where I'm going I look like I do. When I go out on "touristy" activities like walking tours, I just put a credit card and some money into a little embroidered cloth purse that's on a long cord and wear it across my body under my jacket. The handbag stays in the safe in the hotel. The camera is small enough that it can go in my pocket.
I second LSky's view that one should stay away from all that travel-related junk they try to sell you in the travel sections of department stores.

I don't take my regular handbag on trips because I want one with a little more room in it. I also want one that is particularly light and has the option of extending the strap so I can wear it across my chest rather than just on one shoulder. During my regular life, I don't carry my handbag all day every day and I am not generally carrying things like maps and guidebooks.

LSky - definitely. I wouldn't wear/carry anything on vacation that I wouldn't at home. Mostly this is because I have trouble buying anything that is impractical or has only one use. I just find regular stuff that will work well for travel. Now, whether I wear tacky and ugly things... I make no guarantees about my fashion-sense, but I am no more tacky on trips than I am at home
