Expedia tickets going up in price AFTER purchase?

The tickets I ordered last weekend from Expedia aren't for Europe, but it will effect whether I use Expedia again (and I do plan to be in Europe once or twice this coming year).

I'd gotten an email (from another source) that there were great rates to San Jose, CA. I bought 2 tix from Expedia, because they undercut the email sourcse by a little. The price was great, $109.00 round trip plus taxes and such each. I got an email confirmation of my purchase, including the price and saying my tickets were bought.

I noticed that there wasn't anything charged to my cc except for the $10.00 Expedia fee this week (I bought them over the weekend). So I looked today, and the price went up - even though I received a confirmation with the other price. Has anyone had this problem? I have used Expedia for flights, hotels, tours, etc. - including for Europe. If this is an issue that might crop up again, though, I don't want to use them for future trips.

I am confused - has Expedia actually charged you this higher price, or are you just seeing the higher price on the web site? It can take up to several weeks for ticket charges to appear on your credit card.

Hi Will!

Thank you for answering me, I'm so confused - I've never had this happen before!

I booked tickets on Expedia this past weekend. I gave them my credit card, and it came back with an Expedia travel confirmation and itinerary number. I checked back a day or two later, waiting for my confirmation from Continental (so I could book seats). The email I received from Expedia gave me the price, and flight information and it said it was a confirmation.

I checked back yesterday (since my card had not yet been charged), and the price went up! I just received an email from them saying: Airlines routinely change their prices. In addition, they limit the number of seats available for discounted fares; as the discounted seats sell out, those fares are no longer available. Consequently, it is possible that a specific fare will be available when you begin planning your trip but will no longer be available when you try to confirm seats.
------

The thing is, I could have gotten a lower price last weekend. I can still get a little bit of a lower price from Continentals own site, but not as good as I could have gotten this past weekend. I thought if I get a confirmation from Expedia, that means that is the price I've booked it for. I have never had a price go up after I've received an email confirmation for a price.

Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving. It isn't like I can't afford the price, and it's not awful - I just could have done better (it went up by about $150 total).

Well, I thought that I'd gotten all the numbers out, oh well! Sorry about that, I am not sure how to delete a message (or if there is a way to do that).

FIRST: Call your CC issuer and ask them what the authorization amount is from that Expedia ticket sale. That will be in the system whether or not the sale has appeared on any statement, electronic or otherwise.

You are saying Expedia confirmed seats at a certain price.

There is nothing NEW about seats changing in price and no longer being available, etc., etc...that happens with all the seats no matter who sells them.

It seems to me that if Expedia confirmed a price for seats THAT is the price you should be paying. The fact that the price has risen subsequent to YOUR sale is irrelevant since apparently seats were available at YOUR price when Expedia sold them to you.

If they weren't then Expedia was obviously engaged in fraud.

Thanks Dukey - my husband is on the phone with them right now.

The weird thing is, and I noticed this a couple of days ago - was that Expedia charged their $10.00 fee, and nothing else. That was unusual - so I figured that the ticket charge should come through shortly. The $10.00 charge was put through the day after my ticket purchase (purchase was on Saturday, the $10.00 posted on Monday).

I finally checked again today, since I keep very good track of my purchases and wanted to move money to the CC once done. Nothing was charged yet, so I checked Expedia again.

Sorry so wordy - my husband is talking to them now. He's better at being firm than I sometimes am. He says it looks like they sat on the ticket purchase, and didn't make it right away. Thus the $10.00 charge only.

Thank you for reading my posts on Thanskgiving! I wanted to even wait to call for tomorrow (since I don't want to be stressed today), but he thought it'd be best to do it now.

I'd tell Expedia that if your ticket price doesn't match the confirmation you are going to contact your credit card co. and dispute the charge.

Thanks everyone - it LOOKS like they are going to honor the price. They said they will absorb the price increase themselves.

For anyone using Expedia - I have never printed a receipt before, just the confirmation (I have never had an issue). So PRINT THE RECEIPT! The Expedia fee and the airline fee are posted separately, but not normally that many days apart (not in my experience). So watch that too.

Hopefully we'll get our $307 minus the $10.00 charge through soon. I am not sure why they didn't buy the tickets right away, but I'll keep watch even more closely on anything I buy from Expedia, Travelocity, etc. in the future.
