In August 2004 there were lots of 29 euro Cherbourg-Portsmouth fares, which i thought was very cheap - it may have well been because they had just introduced the catamarans perhaps, but fares you quote now seem more in the ballpark and then yes take the night boat and save hotel money.

After a ferry disaster about 20 years ago, they were called "roll-on, roll-off, roll-over" ferries for a while! Safety and security were tightened up a lot afterwards, and standards are much higher than they were. THe dieppe- Newhaven service should connect with a train to London, and could be pleasant in good weather. What time of year are you thinking of?
