Even though you don't have to tip in Europe, dont you feel obliged to do so?

I noticed in Austria (I have travelled there extensively) that the service charge in restaurants is often 10%. Therefore, I leave 5% extra as a minimum for adequate service, but 10% extra if the service was exceptional. I never put this extra on the credit card, but just leave some euro coins on the table. And thats a good method BTW of getting rid of the pile of coins you WILL accumulate seemingly as soon as you arrive in Europe.

I'm always curious why this is "annoying" to you. Are you "annoyed" easily at how other people spend their money? Are you annoyed if a friend spends $500 for a pair of shoes, or $1000 for a blouse? Unless your friend insists you pay half of this very generous tip, why should it annoy you if this person wants to be generous to others?
Would you also be annoyed if walking down the street, this friend put a $100 bill in the Salvation Army donation basket?

Maybe its guilt rather than annoyance.
Anyway, to answer the question regarding maids. I figure on leaving 1 or 2 euro per night. But I leave it on the bedside table after the FIRST night there, in other words, ahead of time. I've never had a problem getting clean linen and towels since.

This "guilt" over tipping has been brought on by the American restaurant industry. Somehow, they conspired to pay their waitstaff substandard wages, leaving it to the restaurant patrons to make up the difference in their wages.
In the US, you go into a restaurant knowing your server is only making a couple of bucks and hour. I feel pretty much obligated to leave at least a 15% tip - regardless of quality of service (unless it was horrible, of course.) It has become ingrained in us to leave a tip - that's why we feel the "guilt" when it's not expected in Europe.

What about restaurant bills that include the service charge (sometimes as much as 22%), and then print on the bottom of the check "tip is not included" ?!! I've seen this throughout Europe, and it pisses me off that a restaurant could be so arrogant as to print that!! Are they just trying to scam tourists, and guilt us into tipping even more?

In most European countries there will not be a percentage for service charge on the bill, since service is included in the prices. A tip is the amount that you give on top of the service charge; to reward good service. Technically, no-one in Europe would need to tip, since service is included, but in reality, nearly everyone leaves something extra; this is then called the tip. The service charge and tip are two different things.
Many people here are not familiar with the American way of tipping; they would find it hard to believe that the waiter really does not get paid if you don't give a tip. They think the tip is just something extra. I've lived in the USA, and had to explain this several times to visiting friends and relatives. They thought that leaving a 15 to 20% tip was very extravagant.

Throughout Europe?? Odd...I've never ever seen that, nor have I encountered anything more than a 15% service charge.
