European Travel -- Luggage question

Hi all,

Just a quick question for those of you who have travelled recently in Europe. My wife and I are leaving next Sunday to go to Madeira and then on to the Greek Isles for a couple weeks and we are concerned about luggage size and weight. Are the airlines, particularly some of the smaller ones in Europe, enforcing size and weight limits on luggage? If so, what are they?

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Almost all airlines in Europe allow you to you take (for economy / coach class travel) 20 kgs per person and one smallish carry on bag.
Check the airlines' web sites for exceptions to this general rule.

Check the airline luggage limits. Domestic travel limits are lower than international. I met a man on a Warsaw Paris flight that had been charged $600 for excess luggage weight. He was upset because he was within International limits.

Each airline has its own restrictions/limits. Suggest you either tell us which one(s) you are using - or check their individual websites.

But, you are going to two warm, casual places. I couldn't overpack for that trip if I wanted to. You should each be able to get by with one small bag - 21 inches or so you shouldn't run into problems on any airline.

query which I never though of before - domestic limit is lower than international limit. What if I have a domestic leg on my international trip? For instance I live in Jacksonville, FL, when I travel to Europe I either have and add on flight of Jacksonville to Atlanta before transatlantic flight or Jacksonville to Miami. For this leg will international weight limit apply since my bags will be checked through to Heathrow or because technically it is a domestic flight will the US standard apply?

Bags checked from the US into Europe come under the piece system as opposed to the weight system....two pieces up to 70# each plus a carry-on can be checked free to the final destination within Europe and this includes any connecting flights.

To add to Intrepids response - but once you're at your final destination, should you decide to take any internal European flights, you'll have to adhere to European domestic weight limits which are 20KG (44 lbs) Economy, and you'll get hit will overweight charges.

I don't klow what these "European domestic weight limits" are supposed to be, but on Ryanair the limit is 15 kg.
