Europe in July and August , Crisis Times
Hello all, I`ve got to start a course in the UK in September , prior to this I´m willing to travel the region for a while, but I was advised many times no to do so in July and August, due to the peak same ol´ problems ( people everywhere, prices go up, no accomodation...etc )
Since I´m not in the Eurozone , all the news received on tv and the media about Europe
these days are really really bad news, not only from Greece, from most western Europe.
One may suppose that tourism has decreased as well.
I could not afford the usual High Season fever during 2 months , but I would
if prices are more reasonable.
My question is , how different this is from previous years ?
Any off the beaten path city hideout place to use as a hub? ..... also Eastern Europe ?
Was just thinking on doing the north of France first , then move on....any suggestion?

There's some sporting event on in London this year affecting prices but in much of urban Europe August ISN'T a peak time as people head for the Mediterranean or the hills.

On the other hand, cities in southern Europe can be a bit uncomfortable if you're not heat tolerant: air conditioning isn't that widespread (which is why so many people head for the beach or the hills).
Who can guess what may happen economically, or its effects? Chances are it won't make that much difference to the tourist experience one way or the other. Eurozone countries may well be a bit cheaper on the exchange rate, and there may be some good discounts available on accommodation - or more people may travel for that very reason. There may be differential effects between different countries; there may be more street disorders in Greece and possibly Spain - or there may not.

I would avoid London during the Olympics but you said you wanted to tour other parts of Europe so that shouldn't matter anyway.
Beach type places will be more crowded in August than other times of the year, and prices will be higher. But other than that July and August are perfectly fine times to travel around Europe. Some places even have lower rates in July and August than they do in May, June and September which are also very popular times to travel. There are more crowds than in February or November but places have longer hours, there is more daylight, lots of good things too.
You don't say what you price range is, only that you don't think you can afford "high season". Have you looked anywhere yet? Where would you like to go? What is your budget? Chances are you can find lots of 'affordable' places all over Europe during the summer.
