Europe in August
The only time I can travel this year is August. The friend I'll be travelling with would like to go somewhere in Europe. I know it's peak season, but any suggestions of where we might go without hitting unbearable crowds. Neither of us are beach people, so that's not a big issue.
Thanks!

If you haven't been to London, that might be an option. Better yet, why don't you think of several places you would especially like to go and then contact this forum again to get their thoughts? Lots of people travel in August and many might have pros and cons on various destinations.

As Ira said, stay away from resort areas. If you go to cities like Florence, you'll get low season rates. At the end of August the exodus of cars going from the south of countries with beaches to the north is amazing. Miles of traffic.

Hotel rates in Sweden drop during August because traveling salesmen are off the road and away on their own holidays. That was our experience and a pleasant surprise -- so you have some negotiating room when it comes to obtaining lodging at a discount.
