Eugene Fodor's Intriguing Background...Guidebook Innovator; CIA Agent...

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/42215999/n.../#.VTfA-SFVhBc

Just came across this article from 2011 that marked Fodor's guides 75th year - in many ways Fodor's guides were the archtype of the modern guidebook - way back in the 1930s Eugene was writing guides for tourists - and here we are in this great forum benefitting from Eugene's efforts.

Eugene Fodor had an amazingly interesting life - let's celebrate his efforts in many ways of launching the modern guide book and his work carries on today with guidebooks and this forum.

Hat's off to Eugene Fodor!

Great article - loved this regarding hiring spies: "But I told them to make sure and send me real writers, not civil engineers. I wanted to get some writing out of them. And I did, too"

As you may recall, my wife and I were asked to attend that 75th Anniversary celebration in NYC in 2011. It was jointly sponsored by the Czech tourist office and was a lovely affair. Here is my TR for that fun time with the Fodor's people.

Thanks for that, bobthenav.

Love "Travel Intelligence" - sounds like the spy connection is still going strong.

PalenQ, thanks for posting this.

<i>"...a website with nearly 2 million unique visitors each month" </i> is a stat about which I'd wondered.
