The situation: will be arriving at Gatwick on a Tuesday morning and will be flying out of Gatwick on the subsequent Thursday.

We do not feel it is worth it to go to London for those two nights and thought we might stay somewhere within public transport distance of Gatwick. Thinking about the beach; do not want to rent a car but could if necessary. Brighton? Would it be good for more than one night? (never been) Isle of Wight? Southeast of Gatwick somewhere? Just want to kick back and relax in interesting surroundings but open to suggestions.

Brighton would be perfect - direct frequent trains from Gatwick and lots of things of interest - maybe not Opera but more low-brow fare like what's found on piers - not the bet beach weather always but convenient if want typical seaside resort - yeah try Brighton 'Rock'. And, the fancy old Pavillion is great - yup Brighton a fun place IME of staying there several times to relax after long flight. If want easy day trip trains trundle up and down the coast - like to Hastings and 1066 Country.

Pal, thanks. We may end up staying at the Sofitel at Gatwick since we can be guaranteed to be in the room between 8 and 9AM after the overnight flight. Our onward journey leaves Gatwick rather early in the monring so we may just use it as a "base" and take the train to a couple of places such as Brighton.
