Yes you don't want a car in London, picking up a car from the airport is easy but you need to read up on the laws in the UK. Can I suggest go on youtube with your significant other and watch a few round abouts just to get the hang of it. The rules for the road are called the "highway code" and can be read here https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code just click on different bits, NB there is no such crime as "jaywalking" in the UK, however in some of the smaller towns you will find walkers stepping in front of your car (raised eyebrow).

I'm not that impressed by avebury but you may find the car parking charges to be surprising !
Bilboburgler,
Yes, your idea of watching youtube videos is a great one, thank you! I will definitely do that! Thank you for the above links and for the highway code link. That is really helpful. Ugh...the jaywalking is always stressful. It's stressful here too. Someone told me to look at Avebury over Stonehenge because you can't get anywhere near the stones (not that I thought you could). Do you have an opinion on that? Thanks again!

That is plain silly -- do both. I don't understand when people say you can't get 'anywhere near' the stones. Check this site -- does that look like one can't get anywhere near them???

Stonehenge - 10 Tips for a Clueless Foreigner | Take the Travel

(Avebury is great too BTW and with a car you can easily visit both)

Avebury is very different from Stonehenge and yes do both if driving easy. Stones are much smaller and numerous and yes you can walk amaongst them but Stonehenge is much more impressive and janis gives links to appreciate it better than a quick look from fenced off areas.

Wow, this is an incredible link! 15 feet is close! I thought you couldn't get anywhere near that close so this is excellent. I'm thrilled at the possibility of trying to be able to go into the center of the stones if you pay more. Hmmm....Okay, fabulous link, I'm going to forward to my husband. I think we've decided to skip going North to the lake district and Yorkshire Dales. We'll focus on a few castles like Thornbury and Amberley (I think Hever is sold out for our dates) and then Stonehenge and maybe cotswolds. Your help has been wonderful, thank you so much!

PalenQ, I just saw her link and it was great! If we can do both, we will. We're getting closer to pinning this down. That link says you can be 15 feet away, that's amaing! Thank you for your help on this, everyone has been great!
