Elvas or Badajoz

We are going to be between Evora, Elvas, Badajoz and Merida. We are planning a night in Evora and a night in Merida but there are quite a few things to see between Elvas and Badajoz. Where would you station yourself for one night? Elvas or Badajoz. Thanks!

There's not much happening in Elvas. I would push on to Badajoz and use it as a base for one day. The NH Gran Hotel Casino de Extremadura would make a good stop for the night.

It´s only 15, 20 minutes max between Elvas and Badajoz. I would opt for Badajoz, and stay either at the NH or at the Badajoz Center (it usually has good offers, but forget the breakfast, go outside and get it at one of the bars nearby).

Bye, Cova

Thanks! Currently in Salamanca and going to move on in a couple days. Does it make sense to just stay in Merida for a few nights and make trips out to Elvas, Badajoz and Evora?

Muchas gracias!

Mérida is the capital of Extremadura, so you will find a little more to do and it has some great Roman ruins and museum. The Parador in Mérida still has an excellent restaurant. It's in the Michelin Guide, as is Rex Numitor, which is a Bib Gourmand. Restaurant Gonzalo Valverde would also be a good option for lunch.

The best restaurant in the area is Artio** (restauranteatrio.com) in Cáceres, which has a great medieval quarter.

Caceres to me was a real gem =- especially the ancient upper town - consider it as a base too.

I enjoyed both Elvas and Badajoz but really not much going on in either though neat old towns in a stark setting.
