Thanks brotherlee. I did look thru your link and found those quite helpful but I also sometimes have a bit more faith in the 'seasoned' travellers on this site. If anyone can add some details it would be greatly appreciated.

We stayed at Elounda Blu about five years ago. It is a fabulous hotel. Very stylish with wonderful views. Be sure to take a road trip south of Elounda where you head up the mountain, you'll find a couple of quaint roadside cafes with magnificent vistas over the sea.

If you want to visit Spinalonga - the island that was a leper colony, take the local bus to Plake or walk along the coast road and take the boat across from there. The boats from Elounda are larger and take big groups of passengers who all arrive at the same time. The small boat from Plaka usually only takes about 10 people. If you've read the book "The Island" which tells the story of the colony you can meet the real Maria who is mentioned in the book. She is a very elderly lady who sits in the taverna on the main road next to the bus stop in Plaka.

The actual town is at least, if not more, than a mile. You would have to take a cab or rent a car. This would not keep me from staying here, however. It is a contemporary and beautiful property and worth it in my opinion. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat if I went back to Crete (which we loved!)
