Egads, another tipping question!

I sometimes get my hair done in Italy, France or England. I generally get a shampoo, blowout and hot iron, but sometimes a haircut. Does "no tipping" apply to hair salons? Barber shops? What are the standards, please?

I m` a diehard no tip peroson in europe, but I make exception for the wonderful person who always does my hair and leave her at least 10 euros in her tip jar and 5 for the shampooiste. I go every 4 weeks orsoand get amazing treatments for 1/4 they' d cost in the usa. You don't have to tip.

Nothing is expeted, believe me. They'll love you if you leave ac couple of euros in the box at the counter, but it;s not expected.

A small amount of tipping is indeed done in hair salons, but as noted above, it is not at all obligatory. It is just a way of saying "thank you for not screwing up my hair."

The hotel receptionist in Nancy that recommended a hair salon to me (for a cut) told me "no tipping".

my hairsalon in rome, which is admittedly hip rather than traditional and has lots of non-italian clients, has a common tip jar at the cashier desk. When someone puts a tip in, it gets called out loudly and everyone yells thank you - whenever that happens (rarely), i wow to never do it bcs i find it so embarrassing. In any case, i have been going for years and have never left a tip and never got the feeling it was awaited. On the other hand, i bring sometimes snacks for everyone...

I find that the cost of the haircut and the tip have got less as my has receded. However I do spend more on sunscreen.

There is no tipping in Europe.

I'm with Bilbo. There's a reason why the cheapo places charge £9.

Europe is a big place, each one with a different culture. Yes, we don't like having them changed.

In a ladies' hairdressers in the UK, it IS traditional to tip the girl who washes your hair [they are usually apprentices on a minimum wage] and whoever actually does your hair. However in my case my hair is usually done by the owner of the salon, who I don't tip. She is after all getting the profits.

In olden times in Paris, I know that women usually tipped both the shampoo person and the hairdresser. In modern times, they are often one and the same person except in the most exclusive salons.

As a man, I will admit that I tip the woman who cuts my hair one euro if I happen to have a one euro coin on me. If I don't have one, I don't give anything.

Speaking of great tips, how about this one. Meghan chooses a Canadian hairstylist to be her maid of hono(u)r. That experience has to be worth a few quid.

Seeing the tip amounts in some of the comments, I am curious what male and female haircuts cost in Europe, compared to the US. My local barber charges $17 usd (€13.81) and I give him a $3.00 tip. My Wife pays between $40 usd ( €32.50) and $70 usd (€56.90) for a rinse and cut, depending on which salon is her current favorite, and usually leaves a $10.00 tip. We live in the Pacific Northwest, so I have no idea what such things cost in the rest of the country, though I used to pay $20 usd in Washington D.C, 30 some years ago before I retired, and leave a large tip. Then again, I was dating my barber, Bunny, and she deserved it. Plus I had much more hair.

I pay €31 for wash cut and blowdry, no tip, though the full rate for women is €38.50. DH pays €27.50, which is the normal price for men. Very unfair since it takes longer to cut his than mine. I have the same stylist for a long time, and she also washes my hair and gives me a head massage

We tend to tip if we go out for a meal, no more than 10%, usually we round the bill up to a convenient amount.

I pay €20 for a shampoo and cut, which always has a quick blowdry built in. I used to pay €35 for shampoo, cut, and styling (blow dry) at a different salon, but I realized that the hairdresser takes a lot more care with the cut when they know they can't hide their mistakes with the styling.

In the part of Italy where I live, there is no tipping for haircuts, and no tip jar at the cash drawer.

We're beginning to see tip jars at the trendier bars, but I've never seen anyone put anything in. After seeing a new empty tip jar for several weeks at a local bar, my husband advised them to seed the jar to encourage customers to add to it. They took his advice, but I don't know if it helped. My husband certainly didn't contribute.

I pay £50 for a shampoo, cut, blow dry and style in the City in London. I give my fabulous stylist £55-60. He is amazing and I get my hair done quarterly.
