depending on your flight time and whether you have been to Edinburgh before -- I would highly recommend staying in the city center instead of at the airport.
There is a fast, frequent and inexpensive airport bus that will take you into the center of town. You could see the castle illuminated, walk the Royal Mile, visit some pubs in the old town or on Rose Street, stay in a nice hotel and then take the shuttle bus back to the airport the next morning to pick up your car.
A LOT more fun that staying in a generic airport hotel. If my flight was late at night I would consider staying at the airport - but otherwise, no.

You don't need to rent a car to get into Edinburgh. City center hotels don't offer free parking - some will include it in a package though.
You could take the shuttle bus to your hotel and the next day take it back to the airport and pick up the car - would save the cost of one day's car rental too. There is a left luggage facility at the airport - or you can take the clubs to the hotel.

emckeeve, most centre-city hotels do not have on site parking, and the few that do charge for it. If you decide to go into the city to stay for one night, I suggest you take either the airport bus or a cab and return to the airport to pick up your rental car the following day.
