joannyc,
as you've probably figured out after several days of dead silence, not many of Fodor's care about the opportunity to eat home cooked food with Italians in their historic homes, even if Bologna is all the chatter.
Now if you had started a thread about "MUST EAT AT RESTAURANTS IN TUSCANY????????????", no doubt you would have started a lively thread for vacationers.

Well, indeed I have a memory of shortly after college visiting a large east coast city with a large It-Am community, and when I asked for restaurant recommendations, any place recommended as being "just like mama's" would be sure to offer bland slop. Mama must stink as a cook. I guess the lesson here is that in Italy, the best cooking is left to the pros.

I have a feeling that there was more wrong with the expectations than with the cooking.
Think about the differences between what you eat in a restaurant and what you cook at home.
Home cooking is part of a country's culture, whether it is good or bad. Restaurant cooking is a different aspect of a country's culture, whether it is good or bad. Both are worth experiencing, though I hope you find the good in both cases!

Well, it's not something that I would do but, at some point, I had seen another thread where people seemed to enjoy going to some man's weekly dinner at his home in Paris (I think?).
So, I thought I'd just put it out there...

joannyc, you might be thinking about the Secret Supper Club in Paris. There was a recent thread on it in the Paris forum and a link to a newspaper article as well if I remember correctly.
Berlin has something similar but we have never tried either.
