Dubrovnik Hotels

Hello Travelers!

My husband and I are about to reserve our hotel for our Dubrovnik stay. We ordered a travel book but it hasn't yet arrived... hence I'm turning to you folks for some advice. Is it important to stay near Old Town or are there other things to do around the city? We are looking at the Hotel Ariston b/c its sea-side w/ nice views and resort grounds, but its almost three miles away from Old Town. Is this going to be okay or should we really try to stay closer?

Thanks in advance!

PS - If it helps we are in our low 30s, no kids, like to be near good restaurants and nightlife, as well as the sites. Thank you!

Will you have a vehicle? If not I'd say it's too far (well, actually even if you have a car but that's just my taste) and there are several great views nearer the city. If you are open to the idea of an apartment, we stayed in this one with fantastic views of the city and an easy walk (down) to town. A bit of a climb back but you're young!

(there are smaller apartments as well - the link above is the apartment we stayed in)

Or there is a well reviewed hotel right by the gates - Villa Adriatica

If you can, try to stay closer to the city. Have you checked tripadvisor, com? booking.com?

I loved the Villa Adriatica.

Enjoy!

In Croatia, it's very common to rent a "soba" (private room) or an apartment vs. staying at a hotel. I don't recall there being many proper hotels in Dubrovnik. I stayed at a slightly dumpy (but clean) soba near the Pile Gate, just outside the old town walls. The old town is actually fairly small - you can walk across it in just a few minutes unless you wind up in a maze of steps. I didn't regret not staying in the old town itself, which I imagine inflates the price of your lodgings considerably.

If you book an apartment or soba, try to find out how many steps you might need to climb to get there. The one advantage of staying near Pile Gate (west side, near the Hilton) is that it's fairly flat over there.
