Sessa,
We are planning our honeymoon in Croatia for late April/May 2008. We're looking into the Amoret Apartments for DBV too, so it will be good to hear your thoughts on it. It looks great to me so far!
We're planning to fly into DBV, stay for 6 nights, Split for 3, 1 night in Plitvice, 3 nights in Opatija, and finally 2 nights in Zagreb.
We're leaning strongly toward renting a car, and are interested in seeing Kotor for a day trip, and possibly Mostar? Not sure if we should go with an organized group for this or not...will need to do some more research on driving into Montenegro and Bosnia.
Anyway, have a great trip, and take note of any fantastic restaurants you encounter! Food and wine are some of my favorite parts of travel too!

Karen-
Right now, we are booked at Villa Ragusa in Dubrovnik for 3 nights. This was recommended in Rick Steve's book, and the owner (Pero) has been very helpful so far. They also don't require a deposit up-front which is a plus.
We are definitely going to be renting a car to do overnight trips in both Montenegro and Bosnia. Both seem a little too far for day trips, and we have enough night to explore a few different areas.
I have read pretty positive things about driving in both countries; however, there was a discouraging post last week about driving in Montenegro. Many others seem to have had better experiences so, as of right now, I guess we'll take our chances!
Are you going to do either Hvar or Korcula from Split? I am still trying to decide on this, as I have learned that much will be closed in these areas during March.
Happy planning, and congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Sessa-
We would like to go to Hvar or Korcula from Split. Not sure if we can just go there for the day yet though. (with the car) We haven't done enough research on that part of the itinerary yet. I'm hoping it's okay to use Split as our "home base" to see things in that part of Dalmatia.
to Tracy- I enjoyed reading your "travelogue" and looking at your fabulous pictures. Are you originally from St. Louis? I am, and my fiance moved here about 6 years ago.

keg, thank you for the compliments! I'm not much of a photographer, so lucky the countries we visited did all of the work for us by being so wonderful!
I am a St. Louisan, born and raised. I am actually from the Glen Carbon/Edwardsville area, just across the river in Illinois. We moved to Charlotte, NC last October and as much as I love it here I am still very homesick for my family and St. Louis....and I'm craving some good Italian food from Zia's!
Where abouts in St. Louis are you from, if you don't mind my asking?

Hi Tracy,
I lived in Florissant/Hazelwood till high school, and then moved to Clayton. I now have a house in University City. I don't mind you asking...although it would have been amusing if you would have asked me where I went to high school
Your pics and description of your travels makes me so excited to go to Croatia! Six months to go...

Ah, the old "where did you go to school" question....good ol' St. Louis!
I have cousins who lived in the Hazelwood/Florrisant area, although where they went to school is beyond me. Charlotte is quite different from St. Louis and they say that I have an accent (imagine that) but I beg to differ...
Croatia is fabulous...you will have a fabulous time! We considered going back again this year but decided to give Asia a try instead, and are off to Japan exactly one week from today. But I long for Croatia...maybe in a few years!

We spent 3 weeks in Croatia last March and not one day was cool! The weather was perfect!
Do get a car! The driving is very easy. We spent a few days in Zagreb, motored to the northern border of Bosnia, drove south through the country, and then went onto to Dubrovnik. We went to Montenegro...simply lovely.
Every day was wonderful.
We intend to return soon.
Have a great trip!

Sorry I have been off the boards for a while. To reply about the car, no we did not rent ahead of time. We just walked into 3 different places and booked the cheapest without a problem. We booked it about 2 days before we wanted to pick it up, and were even able to get an automatic since we aren't the best at stick shift. If you do book ahead, I suggest comparing rates online. Hotels recommend Hertz, but we found them to be very expensive in comparison. The drive to Palazzo Radomiri should be about 2.5 hrs I think? We got lost looking for the hotel so it's hard to say, but had no trouble actually getting to Kotor initially. It is only maybe an hour from Dubrovnik to the border.
